Patton Takes Charge!

August 2, 2011

On August 1, 1944, the 90th Infantry Division was switched from the First Army to the Third Army, under the command of General George Smith Patton, Jr.  “In all honesty, it didn’t mean that much to me,” 90th Division infantryman, Hobert Winebrenner said.  “I had heard a couple of Patton’s speeches in England, knew of [...]

OK, I’ll admit it.  The History Junkie is a bit addicted to the Battle of the Bulge.  This edition of the 90th Infantry Division Pic of the Week features another shot from Bastogne, Belgium.

This Monday’s 90th Infantry Division Pic of the Week features a sobering shot from the U.S. Military Cemetery at Foy, Belgium.  Row after row of fresh graves follow the Battle of the Bulge.  Crosses mark Christian sites, while the Star of David adorns the remains of Jewish soldiers.  This Memorial Day, may we be especially [...]

If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m really interested in the Battle of the Bulge.  I love this shot of Bastogne, Belgium shortly after the liberation of the city from the Germans.  Looks a little busy, huh?

Although the phrase is probably overused, some pictures do “say a thousand words.”  Case in point, this 90th Infantry Division photo from Bavigne, Luxembourg, and the Battle of the Bulge.

Monday so soon?  You betcha!  And winter has returned to the Midwest.  At least we have the 90th Infantry Division – Picture of the Week.

It’s Monday again, and time for the 90th Infantry Division – Picture of the Week. More snow and cold, here in the land of the History Junkie.  Accordingly, we have to stay with a Battle of the Bulge theme.

I think I can safely say that we’ve all been amazed by the progress of Arizona Representative, Gabrielle Giffords, in the aftermath of the shooting at Tucson.  Some would call her climb thus far nothing less than a miracle.  We all certainly wish her well. It got me thinking of others, that I’ve talked to [...]

This kind of weather has the History Junkie thinking of the Battle of the Bulge.  The cold.  The snow. Hell, HJ even woke up this weekend to thick dense fog. Following the D-Day landing at Normandy, Adolf Hitler witnessed his German forces being systematically pushed toward the homeland.  In December, he struck back, with the [...]

Today we are unveiling another History Junkie mainstay.  As mentioned before, HJ has a special bias for the 90th Infantry Division.  Each and every Monday morning, from here until the end of time, we will feature a 90th ID – Picture of the Week from World War II!  Pause for applause. While I was working [...]
