Letters From War Wednesday: World War II – Bob Gage.

B-24 Bomber Pilot, Bob Gage, possessed a wonderful sense of humor.  In this edition of Letters From War Wednesday, we feature a November 1942 note home from San Antonio, Texas, where Gage was continuing his pilot training.

Lieutenant Bob Gage - B-24 Bomber Pilot

“Here I am again with another change of address.  I’m in the Pre-Flight school now.  This is really some place, as at least three other Noble county men already know, for they have been through here.  We get about four years’ college in nine weeks.

“I dropped my pencil in math class yesterday.  I reached to pick it up and missed one year of math, so you can see they really throw it at you here.

“We have the upperclassmen and the lowerclassmen system here and the upperclassmen sure make it uncomfortable for the lowerclassmen, but if I can bear up a while longer maybe I’ll be an upperclassman.

“I sure could use some previous training in radio code, as I’m having quite a time with it, but I’ll get it.  Anything to get a pair of those silver wings and get up there and help brother Jim spout a few thousand rounds of lead at those … snakes!”
