In this edition of Letters From War Wednesday, we feature a short note home from Captain Wayne Sandefur, commanding officer of Company L, 152nd Infantry, 38th Infantry Division, upon his arrival in the Philippines.
Nov. 3 1944
Dear folks,
When you receive this, you will know that we have landed safely. We had fine trip with clear sailing all the way. For a land lubber, the sea got a little rough a few times with some sea sickness resulting. However, it did not number me amongst its victims. I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought that it would hit me first.
I wrote to you some time ago, hoping that the letters would be mailed at the last port we touched. Regulations forbid the dispatching of mail while en route, but since we did not have a mailing at our port of embarkation we were in hopes that it would go out, but the authorities would not stretch a point.
I’m sorry that I can’t write you all the news about where we are and where we’ve been, but that is censorship. I should be able to tell you in my next letter where we are and all about this place. At present I can’t. Please give my address to all interested.
Love,
Wayne
Sandefur and his unit would soon take to the Battle of Zig Zag Pass, where he and his Company L would find themselves at the heart of it all.
