Letter to the Editor.

The History Junkie has found a true friend and comrade in Eileen Reynolds Sheehan of Hendersonville, North Carolina.  Eileen’s brother, Gene, was lost in 1945 when his submarine, the USS Barbel, was sunk with no survivors.

She recently submitted the following letter to the Hendersonville Times-News.  Eileen we thank you for your praise.  But even more than that, we thank you for your enthusiastic support of our soldiers, sailors and airmen, past and present.  Keep History Alive!

“Dear Editor

“At Christmas, 2006, the Times-News printed “Spirit of the holidays survives in a 59-year-old Christmas card”.  It’s the story of survivors of the WWII submarine, USS Barbel, crew connecting in an amazing effort to fill in the blanks with pictures and information.  Every year there are serendipitous Christmas moments of connection.  This year was no exception.

“The daughter of another survivor introduced me to the website www.everytownusa.com and the author of  “Everytown, USA-From Main Street to the Front Lines“, Michael McCoy.  Her father passed away this year, but not without fulfilling a promise to his brother.  That is beautifully described in a December blog on the site as is my contribution of Cary IL Memorial Day Roll Call.  This is history in its purest form.

“We agree with Mike Tower’s recent article about bringing troops home. That’s our opinion, too, Mike!
