Weekly History Wrap-Up: 04/22/11.

And yes, time for the Weekly History Wrap-Up.

Wow! The CIA declassified World War I era spy documents. Really? Already?

The remains of World War II Army Air Force Tech Sgt. James Maynard have been recovered, identified and returned to the family.  Maynard’s C-47 went down on Leyte, in the Philippines in March 1945.  He’ll be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

In Hollidaysburg, PA, 101-year-old World War II vet, Mike Cap, received replacement medals for those lost long ago.

Saratoga County, NY held a ceremony to honor Clarence Dart, a surviving member of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen.

A note-worthy collection of Civil War artifacts will soon hit the auction block in Yonkers, NY.

NorthJersey.com gives us their modern take on the commemoration of the beginning of the Civil War, with an admittedly northern tilt.

Sadly, a sign of the times, the 2nd Infantry Division of the Korean War Veterans Alliance has decided to call it quits.  We must not forget that the 2nd ID saw some of the heaviest fighting of the war.

Honestly, I’d never heard of this truly remarkable encounter during the Korean War.  Along the banks of the Imjin River in 1951, some 866 British soldiers, from the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, held off 27,00o Chinese attackers. Wow!

Til Monday, have a historical weekend!
