Ah, the cold is upon us. November always brings that bitter wind and those first hints of winter. But better in your warm house than on picket guard … during the Civil War.
This edition of Letters From War Wednesday features a short note home, written 150 years ago this month, from Union soldier, William Kimmell, serving with the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, to his girlfriend, Leah. Love it!
“I was out on Picket Guard last night and came in this morning almost froze. One of my mess mates handed me a letter saying, this will warm you up. I looked at the hand writing, broke the seal and read it. He asked is it from home. A little more than from home, I replied. Ah! was the exclamation he made and turned away satisfied.”
