Letters From War Wednesday: World War I – Jesse Winebrenner.

In this edition of Letters From War Wednesday, we feature a note home from World War I soldier, Jesse Winebrenner, just prior to he and his brother, Ben’s, departure for the front lines in France. Given that the pair’s brother, Virgil, was killed earlier in the conflict, Jesse is attempting to prepare his mother for their entry into the war. Heber, also mentioned in the note, is their little brother at home.

“I have some good news to tell you,” Jesse wrote home to his mother in September 1918.  “It may not sound good to you but I want you to look at it just like I am looking at it.  We are going to leave here soon and we are one happy bunch.  Don’t you worry one bit about me or Ben because we can stand it all.

“We don’t want you or Father or Heber to worry about us.  This is what we want you to know.  We are alright all the time.  It doesn’t make any difference what happens to us.  If you ever hear of me being wounded, don’t worry about it, because it won’t hurt me very much because I’ll have the best of care and I am not a bit afraid of anything like that.

“All I want you to do is live as happy (as possible) and see that Heber comes out alright.  If he should happen to be the only son you have left after this war, you can be proud of him because lots of people don’t even have one boy to feel proud over.  I mean one like Heber.

“You don’t need to worry about Ben and I never getting back because we will some time.”
