As a history junkie, I am, of course, fascinated by historical artifacts. I get especially excited by war memorabilia. From time to time, we feature a post dubbed, Remnants From War.
This offering comes to us from a friend and follower of the site, Christine Bogert DePonte. If you’ll remember, her uncle, John Bogert, died with the entire crew of the USS Barbel, when their submarine was sunk by a Japanese bomber on February 4, 1945 in the South China Sea.
Christine has taken a keen interest in the Barbel family. A while back, she came across a personally-signed note from President Harry Truman to the family of Barbel crew member, Ferris Washington Wilks, for sale on ebay. She secured the item for future generations to enjoy. Many thanks Christine.
My great uncle Lester Sarkady also died aboard the USS Barbel, please get in touch if you have any more information or memorabilia. Thank you!
