This week’s Letters From War Wednesday features a short note home, first impressions from Pvt. Eddie Wells, setting foot in Vietnam in the spring of 1968.
“I got over here to Bien Hoa at 12:30 yesterday,” he wrote to his parents upon arrival. “…I can hear bombs going off in the distance.
“…You couldn’t believe what it’s like over here. The kids run around half naked and where they live is nothing but old run down shacks. Little kids yell at you and tell you to go home. I’ll sure be glad to get out of this hell hole and get back home. I hate this place already.”
Eddie Wells, killed in action on August 29, 1968, fought bravely with the 82nd Airborne Division.
