Looking for a little help from all you genealogy addicts and history buffs out there. As you may know from recent posts on this blog, the good folks at Garveston, England are planning a ceremony set for June 6, 2012 to dedicate a memorial honoring the Garveston Twelve. Officials are searching for info and surviving relatives on the crew members lost in the crash. They’ve got a good handle on several of the men, but could use a helping hand with the following heroes.
Pilot: 1st Lt. Raymond J. Sachtleben, Bergen County, New Jersey
Co-Pilot: 2nd Lt. Vernon D. Mueller, St. Louis County, Missouri
Navigator: 2nd Lt. Gerald E. Hirschman, Cedar County, Nebraska
Engineer: S/Sgt. Clarence W. Grimm, Dane County, Wisconsin
Radio Op: Tech/Sgt. William E. Lasio
Gunner: Harry L. Wensel, Livingston County, New York
Gunner: Oliver W. Brown, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania
Thank you in advance!
I have only recently found out about the Garveston Twelve. I know I have missed the opportunity to get this information to you earlier. Gerald Hirschman was my father’s first cousin. I could probably find names and addresses of his sisters, although I do not know off hand whether any of them are still alive. I could investigate other relatives if his sisters are not alive, but you may already have the information you need. If I can help, let me know, please.
I am the nephew of the one crew member that has not been listed:
SSgt. (Postumus) Howard Schwegel, waistgunner on the Sachtleben crew at the time of the crash – he is buried in the U.S. Military cemetery at Cambridge, England.
Thanks,
Wayne
